Alberta Cold is a special kind of cold.
If you purchased your hot tub in Alberta, it should be built and insulated well enough to enjoy when the snow flies and temperatures plummet. There are best practises for identifying and preventing issues before they become problems, or require servicing. Take the simple checklist challenge below:
Your cover is an essential insulating part. It helps keep the water from cooling too quickly. Good idea to check your cover. Does it close properly and seal heat inside? Check there is no large amount of steam escaping. If you have straps, check the clips to ensure they are working. If your cover is water logged or damaged, call and order a new one.
Open the cabinet and check the screw-on nuts around pumps and heater. Is there any leakage or dampness on or around them? If yes, gaskets or nuts can be replaced easily and with very little expense.
Turn on all pumps and check that all features are working. Listen to the pumps to see if there are any strange noises, grinding or growling. If there is, call for service before the winter gets serious.
When temperatures go below -10, open the cover and check the water temperature daily when you are not using it. If it is not heating, or there appears to be no power to the tub - follow the steps below and call us for additional advice and/or a service call.
When your hot tub heater or power fails - it's important to get heat into the cabinet, where the plumbing is housed, as quickly as possible. Ensure you have - on hand all winter - a thermostat controlled small ceramic space heater with an extension cord to reach the interior cabinet. Open the cabinet, place the heater inside, facing away from the pumps and electrical, and seal the area either with the cabinet panel and/or a tarp that fits over the panel area.
Ensure your water is balanced and sanitized. Changing water in extreme cold can cause damage to plumbing, open leaks, even burst fittings. Keeping your water clean and balanced, allows you to enjoy your hot tub all winter.
